42nd Street Show Crits

Sheffield Star - Nov 19 2003

"The Sheffield Teachers Operatic Society put on dazzling performances at the Lyceum this week with their revival of Broadway hit musical 42nd Street. The 50-strong cast, ranging widely in age, sing and tap their way through the famous routines, backed up by a breathtaking set and sparking costumes.

Claire Robertson shines in the lead role of Peggy Sawyer, and old-hand on the amateur stage Judi Johnson Hart gives a polished performance as Peggy's rival Dorothy Brock.

The show features some classic Broadway songs, including a spectacular performance of 'We're in the Money' and a rousing chorus of 'Forty-second Street'.

What gives the show an extra lift is the glittering sets and costumes which gives the whole production the real Broadway touch."

Sheffield Telegraph - Nov 21 2003

"Come and Meet Those Dancin' Feet... an invitation from Sheffield Teachers Operatic Society you won't regret. You could well find yourself tap-dancing across Tudor Square when you come out.

From the minute the curtain rises, or partially rises to reveal a chorus line of dancing feet, you virtually know you're in for a choreographic treat... Most of the dance is tap, of course, and there are plenty of step and rhythmic variations in director Michael Kirkby's choreography, all energetically and infectiously realised in Stay Young and Healthy, We're In the Money and the title song.

It will not ... escape notice that women, headed by Claire Robertson's excellent Peggy Sawyer, far outweigh men in the dance routines bit Andrew Stansall (Billy), Martin Scattergood (Andy) and Mark Harris (Bert) are not embarrassed. ON the contrary, they're inspired.

Richard Carlin throws a few steps in as Julian Marsh and his splendid baritone-hued voice is heard to impressive effect, chiefly in Lullaby of Broadway.

Dorothy Brock is a part made for Judi Johnson Hart but she doesn't overdo it and become a caricature. I Know Now is genuinely moving.

Not so much Shuffle Off to Buffalo, as rush off [to] the Lyceum."
